Taking Pictures and Light

Updated: Sep 3, 2023

I've been challenged with taking pictures of my paintings. One, I have learned not to varnish the canvas painting until after I have taken the pictures. I know that is funny. Using natural lighting still did not get the results I expected because the natural light was coming from only one direction. I can't afford to purchase much equipment right now, so I am making a light box. I will take pictures to share so if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

I finally purchased a light photography box on Amazon. There was one on sale. What a difference! This box fits my 8"x10" canvas panels. Here is the description on Amazon: Upgrade Emart 14" x 16" Photography Table Top Light Box 104 LED Portable Photo Studio Shooting Tent Regular Price is $42.99 but right now (August 11 2023) it is on sale. Using the lightbox has been wonderful. There was one painting that I finished that has different appearances using the lightbox because of the range of light waves reflected off the painting surface. This was on the Sunflower and Bud painting.

Viewing the images above, you can see there is a difference between the sky view and the trees in both images. The top image (Sunflower and Bud) does not appear like the original painting to the eye but the lighting option in the light box produced different results.

I think this is interesting because if the painting is portrayed in different environments indoors, it can really give the right mood for a room.
