Start up - Acrylic Painting

Updated: Aug 23, 2023

When I first began painting, when I was young, my art supplies consisted of a toolbox (similar to a fishing tackle box), charcoal, pencil 3B, brushes of different sizes and a sketchbook that accepted paint. When needing something sturdier, cardboard was fine and board. I had also tried oil and watercolor painting when I was in high school. Now that I am much older and learning more about painting, specifically acrylic painting, I am using canvas flat boards and purposefully working with 8" x 12" canvas boards. (My goal is to reach 1000 before moving up).

To start acrylic painting, at the beginning I began with small tubes with many colors as a beginner, but now I'm more focused on fewer but larger paint tubes. I'm using burnt sienna, ultramarine blue, titanium white, red and primary yellow. I'm also using black if I need the change the shade. The smaller tubes were good to see how different colors complement each other and to try blending and mixing. Then I didn't feel too guilty about experimenting and accidently wasting too much when I was practicing.

The color wheel has been a great addition to my resources while I am experimenting with tones, shades, tints and hues. I'll save this part for a different section.

So basically, I tried different palettes for working with acrylic, while painting and while storing. The two I like best so far is the large palette paper from Amazon basics and the wet store palette box. I tried many more, but some are hard to clean up. I noticed other people using all kinds of palettes, including baking tins, glass, foil, wood and preformatted palettes with bowls. I will link these later so you can see.

The basics palette paper is nice because you can spray and wipe, even after it is dry, but too many times, then it might tear, but otherwise, works great.

The brushes I feel are based on your preference. Some people really like doing the detail so they need the very small model type brushes, such as Nicpro. The Nicpro brushes are all individually covered and come in a plastic case with no noticeable sheading. I am going to also create a separate section for the brushes so that we can review the brushes, sizes and types for different applications.
