Learning about Acrylic Paint

Updated: Sep 3, 2023

So far, I've tried many different brands of acrylic paint. One thing I notice is that the paint needs to fit your style.

Some questions I ask when painting:

  • What texture do I want?

  • Will I need to mix the colors to get the right hue or tone?

  • What about opaqueness?

  • Will I need the paint to flow easily?

  • What surface am I using?

  • How much time do I have to work with?

  • How much paint will I need?

  • What tool am I using? (brush, knife)

Some of the brands I've used:

  • Arteza

  • Golden

  • Liquitex

  • Windsor & Newton

  • Castle Art

  • Benicci

  • Artecho

If I need to mix colors, for example, to obtain a nice green color, or a pink color, then I want pigments that mix well. If I want to just use the primary colors, I found that Liquitex works well. Golden is great to work with and is expensive. The titanium white also seems to be different with different brands.

The main color I notice that is different with different brands is the blues. One brand of ultramarine blue (red shade) is not the same as another brand of ultramarine blue. So with the blues I use Golden so I can have better quality.

The colors I use the most are:

  • Primary Yellow

  • Primary Red

  • Primary Blue

  • Burnt Umber

  • Alizarin Crimson

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Titanium White

  • Mars Black

While I'm still learning, I'm using 8" x 10" flat canvas panels. After I've accomplished 1000, then I will be ready to expand!
